Goodwill North Central Texas Needs Your Donations

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (May 22, 2017) – Goodwill North Central Texas, Inc. is calling for residents to donate their unwanted clothing, furniture and household items to the nonprofit.

“The revenue generated from the sale of donated goods goes to support our job training and placement programs for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment,” said David Cox, President & CEO. “After you drop off your shirts, shoes, furniture, electronics and other items, we sell them in one of our 23 local Goodwill stores, on our Amazon bookstore, or on our online auction site, shopgoodwill.com. When someone buys your item, we use that money to fund our mission.”

Last year Goodwill North Central Texas placed 1,953 people in employment. In addition, more than 4,500 received education, training and mentoring to strengthen their skills through programs like the North Texas Institute for Career Development (NTI), work adjustment training (paid on-the-job training), veteran and homeless services. “Your donated stuff helps create jobs for people like Shannon, who lost most of her fingers and her hearing in a childhood car accident; Gina, a single mother of four with a GED and a criminal record; and Meri, a S.T.A.R.S. participant with Noonan Syndrome,” said Cox. Goodwill’s Donation Impact Calculator shows donors the impact of their donations in terms of number of hours of career counseling, on-the-job training, résumé preparation and other services.

The impact doesn’t end there — the planet also benefits when donors choose to ditch the dumpster and drop their items at Goodwill. Since 2011, Goodwill North Central Texas has helped divert more than 78,360 tons of items from winding up in local landfills. Even items that can’t be sold in stores or online are recycled instead of discarded. Goodwill bundles unsold donations for sale in the aftermarket commodities market, including metals, textiles, shoes (paired and single), belts, hats, purses, children’s stuffed animals and soft toys, hard toys, clean plastics, books, digital media, cardboard, wire and cable, computers and printers.

Donors can also save money on their taxes by claiming the donation. Donors should retain the receipt from the donation attendant and use an online valuation guide to connect a monetary value to the donation.

There are many ways to donate to Goodwill North Central Texas including local attended donation centers and Goodwill retail stores, Goodwill 2 Go Home Pickup in Northeast Tarrant County, or even by donating old cars or making a financial contribution. Revised donation rules make it easier than ever to donate – Goodwill  Fort Worth will accept just about anything, with only a few exceptions due to environmental and safety considerations. Goodwill cannot accept mattresses/box springs, automobile parts and tires, building materials, and hazardous materials including chemicals. Goodwill does accept televisions at their Fort Worth Campus Drive headquarters. Fort Worth residents can also drop off TV’s and e-waste at three designated drop off stations at city landfills that Goodwill helps staff (2400 Brennan Ave; 5150 Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway; and 6260 Old Hemphill Road).
