GOODWILL OPENS NEW PROGRAM FOR DISABLED

Grand Opening for Goodwill S.T.A.R.S. Set for March 31st

 

WHO:  Goodwill North Central Texas’s President and CEO, David Cox; Goodwill North Central Texas  Vice President GSS &STARS, Kimberly Smith; Texas Association of Goodwills Executive Director Lori Hening; 70 disabled adult participants; Members of Fort Worth City Council; and representation from Tarrant County Commissioners Office

WHAT: Goodwill North Central Texas has developed an innovative program designed for adults with significant disabilities and barriers to employment. S.T.A.R.S stands for Skills Training Achieves Results and is a unique day-habilitation program for adults with disabilities.  S.T.A.R.S recreates daily living scenarios through an interactive, realistic environment. Participants will rotate between different places such as the apartment, general store, town square, art studio, and fitness center. Each different place will give participants a chance to learn real life skills while having fun and interacting with other staff and participants at the same time.

WHY:  This program uses this program and curriculum designed to help participants overcome their disadvantages and achieve maximum independence in the long run.  Goodwill is a non-profit leader in providing education, training and career services for people with disabilities, such as physical or mental disabilities, lack of education or work experience and homelessness. Goodwill is ranked 11th on the Forbes 20 Most Inspiring American Companies list, the only non-profit to be included.  Goodwill North Central Texas, Inc.’s, 22 retail locations provide not only affordable goods and services, but also jobs for those in need and revenue to support Goodwill’s charitable mission. Goodwill also provides Tarrant and the surrounding counties with job resource centers, equipped with job-search experts, computers, Internet access and telephones.
